*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT ACTUALLY LI'S CANONICAL LUIGI, MARIO, OR PEACH! THIS IS MISTER L'S PAST!*
"Oh, hey Luigi!" The familiar chirp of a toad met the ears of the younger of the Mario twins. He had been hurriedly scurrying down the main hall briskly, carrying an artefact of history with him. It was an item of importance, an item of great renown. It was also a piece of the puzzle that the green-clad brother was attempting to solve. Even now, he was tugging at the ends of the knot, working it out twist by twist, the cogs in his mind turning and readjusting themselves, rewiring and designing even more complex algorithms meant to further research and resolve the mysterious question of how to harness spacetime... It was not until the toad had to call out again, with an equally bright. "LUIGI!" That the brother finally noticed and snapped towards the sound, his cyan eyes wide and visibly on edge. He was thinking. While he was thinking, nobody who cared enough about their well-being should interrupt him.The twitch didn't appear to be noticed by the toad who had called to him, and instead it cheerfully withdrew from a messenger bag a white letter embossed with the royal seal. "Mario and the Princess want to see you as soon as possible! Have a great day, Luigi!" It handed the note to Luigi and then bowed before backing away from the slightly unnerving sibling. Luigi watched its retreat with pale eyes, impatiently waiting for the moment it left eye and earshot before quickly ripping open the letter and reading the contents quickly. Half of the words the green twin did not pay attention to. He only caught the words written in the signature right-handed scrawl of his brother, viscerally different from the curly and swirling letters of the Princess'.
"We need to talk, Luigi. Now."
The twin shook his head slowly, chuckling a little under his breath in a low treble. His voice had deepened considerably in the past few months, props of dealing with the lowlifes who required a strong hand, a stern voice, and a steely glare.. These were worth more than the goods or the gold traded in the market... A leader was in shorter supply than those who could bust their buddies out of any mess they could get themselves in. This was what had made him so valuable to the criminal underworld. Not only was he influential in the world below... but in the world above. He knew the mind of a hero better than most... and he kept tabs on the greatest hero in the Mushroom Kingdom.. He had been sneaking about under Mario's nose for so long that at this point, he had taken it for granted that either Mario simply didn't know about his younger twin's ambitious enterprises, or else was keeping them hushed from the public. This was for the better. If one twin's record was corrupted and tarnished, the other would inevitably attempt to sever all ties with the aberrant sibling. . All to preserve the name. All to preserve the title
By what little honor he had left, he was going to be there. He was going to face the truth, the disownment. That was what the point of the meeting after all. Subtle, perhaps, but outright and forward. He would be there. But there were matters to attend to first. Mario's beloved Blaster, the weapon garnered from the battles of the Rabbid era, was tucked under Luigi's arm, and without so much as a sound, he slipped away, fully understanding the consequences of his build up actions.
Lifting his chin, Luigi took his brother's fury in stride. It was one of the few mastered abilities he had. His brother's flushed cheeks and vibrant temper was nothing new, the blazing blue fire in his eyes, contradicting the light cyan of Luigi's own. There was no emotion in the younger twin's eyes, no regret, no passion. As if he were a living ghost. Thinking back. There had been so many chances for him to take control; so many opportunities wasted that could have resulted in his benefit and his oppressively twin's... removal. Lightning sang in his veins, just as life blazed in his brother's. That lightning was spontaneous and quick, with no regret and no preference. Precise and prefect. Fire was messy, ashen, blazing brightly and then fading away. Luigi would not fade away. He would be remembered, even if it took his death for it to be achieved.
Now Mario was glaring at his twin, looking up at him. Luigi looked down at him blankly, raising an eyebrow. Mario's words had completely fallen on deaf ears. Peach had retreated, unable to witness the confrontation between brethren. A weaker part of him wanted to reach out an stop her, but that weaker part of him no longer had a voice, contained and controlled now by the power of sheer ambition, pride, and boundless resentment. This was revenge. This was a special kind of revenge. The first step towards the goal; a severing of ties. There was no pain felt as Mario disowned him, as he stated that Peach had ordered the green twin to be banished from the kingdom. All of it was a perfect excuse, a perfect benefit for him to take his steps on his own. Without the belittlement, without the embarrassment. Where his brother would rise to the sainthood of a hero, Luigi would find himself high on a pedestal of villainy. Both would be remembered, if only embraced in different ways.
His belongings in a haversack thrown over his shoulder, a black mask surrounding bleached cyan eyes fading to silver, a new wardrobe and a new name. No longer was he Luigi, the green hero of the Mushroom Kingdom. He was the infamous engineer and inventor extraordinaire. He was the Green Thunder; Mister L. The Thunderhand crackled beneath sooty black gloves, marks of tinkering and oily messes. No longer did he have a brother. No longer did he have a home. No longer could he trust anyone beyond himself. And that was all he needed.
All to preserve the name. All to preserve the title.
